What will Baltimore’s Inner Harbor look like in 25 years? In 50 years? In 100 years?
Over the past 100 years, we have seen astronomical changes to the environment, the water, and how people interact with nature. It is difficult, in a period of uncertainty, to envision what a space that is shared by nature and humans might look like in the next 100 years, but for four months, youth and staff at Baltimore Youth Arts sat with the question.
With no certainty, our minds ran in every possible direction. Will the water be higher? Will the shoreline change? How could technology save our shared environment - would it destroy it? For any true change for the better, to extend the well-being of ourselves and our world, we will need one another and will need to work together.
Throughout this project, 31 youth, five BYA staff members, and representatives from the National Aquarium, including educators, conservationists, exhibit creators, and community liaisons, envisioned the future, found common ground, and came to consensus on a visual narrative to complete 12 collaborative artworks.
Now its time to unveil what they made.
Join us on Harbor Wetland, the Aquarium's free, outdoor installation, to see the finished artwork, try your hand at a printmaking activity led by BYA Apprentices, and hear directly from the youth artists about their research and inspiration.
